Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy is when the nerve is removed from the inside of your tooth and replaced with a filling material. After completion of treatment you will need to follow up with your dentist to have your tooth restored back to full function. Root Canal Therapy begins with local anesthesia and then the tooth isolated with a dental dam. An access opening is made into the tooth to gain access to the nerve chamber. The nerve is then removed from all the canals you may notice a scrapping noise during this part of the procedure. An image is taken to determine the length of the roots and ultimately a filling material will be custom fit to the area where the nerve used to be. After each appointment a temporary filling material is placed in the access opening. After completion of the root canal it will be necessary for the patient to see their dentist for restoration of the tooth. We typically see the patient approximately 3 to 6 months after completion of treatment for a checkup image to evaluate the area and to see how everything has healed.
Retreatment of Root Canal
In some instances root canal therapy will need to be repeated or redone. We will evaluate your tooth with an image and clinical symptoms. Retreatment begins with local anesthesia and then the tooth isolated with a dental dam. An access opening is made into the tooth to gain access. The root filling material is removed and the canals are reshaped to accommodate a new custom root filling material. An image is taken to determine the length of the roots and ultimately a filling material will be custom fit to the inside of the tooth. After each appointment a temporary filling material is placed in the access opening. After completion of the retreatment it will be necessary for the patient to see their dentist for restoration of the tooth. We typically see the patient approximately 3 to 6 months after completion of treatment for a checkup image to evaluate the area and to see how everything has healed.

Surgery

Apicoectomy is a surgical procedure that is meant to remove any inflamed or infected tissue from the bone and root end. The procedure begins with local anesthesia. A surgical incision is made and the bone is exposed. From there the root tip of the involved tooth is resected and a small filling may be custom fit to the end of the root. The infected tissue is also directly removed from the bone adjacent to the root in treatment. Stitches, which are dissolvable, will be placed; however, we will see you a few days following the surgery to remove any stitches that remain and to evaluate the healing of the surgical site. We typically see the patient approximately 3 to 6 months after completion of treatment for a checkup image to evaluate the area and to see how everything has healed. In some instances it is necessary to remove the entire root of the tooth in an attempt to maintain the tooth. This procedure is called a root amputation and the process is similar.
